Can the Mets expect to advance in the playoffs if they can lose twice in a row to the lowly Washington Nationals by 7-1 scores? I was at the game this afternoon to witness the lack of hitting. Carlos Carrasco started the game just being activated from the Injury List after missing more than two weeks with a strained oblique. He was not effective and was removed after 2 2/3 innings. He was hurt by an error by Jeff McNeil that led to four unearned runs in the fifth inning.
A rally by the Mets was stopped as they got back-to-back singles from McNeil and Canha before Eduardo Escobar hit a bloop pop-up to left field. Hernandez would drop the ball, but the confusion of whether it was a catch or not caused the Mets to get doubled up and put out any potential runs. It was one of the most unusual double plays that I have seen.
The Mets now lead the Atlanta Braves by only one game.
